Freeborn History

Freeborn Garages was first established in 1980 when the two Freeborn brothers set up a Citroen dealership in Southampton. In fact, Mike Freeborn is still with the company.

In 1986 they relocated to the current site in Northam Southampton.

In 1990, at the height of the previous recession, Andrew Jones bought the business and set up the Freeborn Group as a holding company and appointed Andrew Meader as a main board Director.

The site at Bursledon was bought in 1994 and subsequently became a Hyundai dealership and then the first site for Freeborn Motorhome, before being sold in 2008.

The Godalming garage, originally S E Thomas, was bought in 1996 and became a very successful Citroen dealership.

Tom Willoughby became Financial Director in 2003.

When the European Union changed the legal framework that controlled franchised dealership in 2005, the Godalming business became a ‘spoke’ to the ‘hub’ of the bigger Southampton Citroen dealership. Still selling and servicing Citroens but with a much lower cost base.

Freeborn Motorhomes joined the Citroen business at Godalming in 2005 and still shares the site.

Freeborn Wokingham and Freeborn Winchester came on board as Citroen dealerships in Spring 2009 when Darren Chatterley joined as Sales Director.

The Freeborn Group’s involvement with Romahome dates back to 1991 but it wasn’t until 2000 that the full business was purchased. Brian Bailey who had been with the manufacturer since 1972 was appointed Managing Director of Romahome and Special Vehicles Projects in 2000.
